Great Ideas for Re-Purposing Old Furniture

November 4th, 2013 Paul Dekker

Just because you have purchased new furniture doesn’t mean you can’t find something really inventive to do with the old. Re-purposing old furniture is a great way of adding uniqueness to a space. This solution is also phenomenal for dated pieces you can’t bear to throw away.

Antique, vintage and even just plain old pieces of furniture have become the new “Diamonds in the Ruff”. There are so many ways you can incorporate your unused furniture into a new or existing style of decor, regardless of if you’re purchasing new furniture or not.

If you are planning on buying new, we’ve found some really interesting uses for that old furniture so don’t donate or throw into the alley just yet.  All of these below ideas are the do-it-yourself kind and involve very little work, yet make a big impact.

1. Vintage chairs can become a suitable space for larger dogs to reach their food. Cut out the center of the seat and insert your furry friend’s food dish. You can choose to re-stain the chair or distress it for added appeal.

2. Those old antique side tables can be turned upside down and used as a bed for a little girl’s dolls. You can paint the table an interesting color, use the drawer for storage and the table legs mimic a four-poster bed.

3. Don’t know what to do what that old and tired suitcase covered in burlap fabric? Disassemble the top, place a fluffy blanket inside and now you have a comfy spot for your tiny dog or cat to relax.

4. Upgrading your bed and have no use for the old headboard? Here’s an idea: stain or distress it and then hang vintage hooks onto it and use as a very purposeful coat rack.

5. If you need to upgrade your coffee table to something more modern, why not cover the top of the wooden old one with vintage wallpaper of unique colors and styles and use as a bulletin board in the kitchen?
