Measuring For Your Dining Room Table

February 21st, 2014 Paul Dekker

Your dining room, like your kitchen is part of the hub of any home. This is where families gather to be together, share their days, and eat their meals. It is one of the most social spots in the home. So choosing your dining room table should take into account the kind of atmosphere you wish to create.

The size, rather than what’s on trend, should be your first concern when buying a dining room table. Take into account the size of the room and the number of people you would expect to be seated there. And here are a few tips to help you start the process.

  • Measure the size of your dining room and take notes on a pad for quick reference.
  • Consider the number of guests you are likely to have at a meal and note how many place settings you require.
  • Multiply the number of place settings by 24 inches. This is how long your table should be.
  • Let the size of the room itself decide the width of the table. Allow at least 36 inches between the wall and the table for easy access and passing around food.
  • Using freezer paper cut out the length and width of your table and place the paper on the floor. There should be at least 36 inches between the walls on the width sides of the table and the table.

Now you are ready to get a little creative. Shopping for just the right table should be fun, not stressful. No matter what style you choose or wood grain, or wood stain, let your dining room table reflect a bit of who you are and the kind of host you want to be.
