Shopping for furniture
January 6th, 2015Shopping for new furniture or mattresses can be a stressful experience. Most of us don’t shop for new furniture that often so when we do, it’s unfamiliar territory. Here are a few pointers to make things easier.
Shopping online
There is a wealth of information online and it is where most of us start to look for what is available and to get ideas for what we would like in our own homes. Search the decorating magazines and websites for the look you want in your room or even find a room planner and move the furniture with your mouse to see what will fit and to plan your room layout. Be careful when purchasing on line that you know what you’re getting and what your options and expenses are if you don’t like what you receive. Many styles look similar on line but in person you will see the difference in quality.
Pricing
We all want to spend the least for the products we want but it isn’t always wise to sacrifice quality for cheaper prices. Especially when it comes to beds and upholstered furniture the construction can make the difference in how long the furniture will remain comfortable. Make sure you understand what is and isn’t included in the price. “No Interest” promotions often add hundreds of dollars to the price (either hidden or in admin fees). It is usually wise to have your new furniture professionally delivered to reduce the chance of damage getting it to your home and so the store can look after the recycling of the packaging. Some stores charge for this and others include it in the price. Make sure you know all the costs before comparing prices. Don’t be fooled by claims of huge discounts. Some stores inflate the fair market price in order to offer “40% off”. Compare your bottom line price before you decide.
Service
While none of us wants or expects things to go wrong with our new furniture it is good to know that if something does go wrong you are dealing with a reputable company that will help you get it looked after. If you purchase on line or at a clearance house that level service may not be available.
Don’t be afraid, your independent furniture retailer can help guide you through the process and help you make your home more comfortable and fashionable. They shop the market for the best buys and are your liaison to the manufacturer.
