The Right Setup

One of the most important aspects of a quality reading room is the right furniture; it’ll make all the difference when it comes to designing a space where you’ll want to spend hours lounging around.

Let’s start by pointing out the obvious: you need bookshelves!  If you’re planning a reading room, it’s probably safe to assume that you’re a book lover—give yours a good home! There are many different types of bookcases to accommodate the style and size of any reading nook: something classically tall and narrow up against the wall; or if you’re working with a smaller space try opting for some wall shelving.

We can also assure you that no reading room is complete without a comfy chair to recline in, or a couch to stretch out and nap on in between books! A couple of end tables might be a good idea too—a handy place to keep your snacks and bookmarks.

Ample Lighting

Have you ever tried to read in a room with one measly floor lamp? Straining your eyes to see the pages of your book or holing up under the glow of a single light source is not ideal for productive reading.

Floor and table lamps are convenient and easy to use. There’s no hassle, and you can fill the room with as many as you’d like. If you’re looking for something a little more ornate or widespread, try installing a ceiling lamp or LED light strips along your bookshelves.

If your reading space has excellent natural light streaming through for you to use during the day, it would be smart to put up some curtains in case the sun is too bright, or the window proves too distracting. Plus, you never know when you’re going to want to take a nap!

Decorate!

Your reading room is just that—yours! Personalize it to your taste so it feels warm and inviting. Get creative and express your style with décor that inspires and/or relaxes you. Choose a theme or one or two colors you want to incorporate throughout the room; maybe you have an affinity for Renaissance authors and want to adorn the walls with period art, or need a calm, mellow color to help you focus. This is your space to customize.

Keep some throw pillows on the chair or a fuzzy blanket to curl up with on the couch. Still working on filling up your shelves? Decorate them with fresh flowers or unique statues that add character to the room. Wicker baskets, patterned area rugs, soothing candles—the possibilities are endless!

Whether you like books more than people, need a quiet place to concentrate, or you simply have an extra room that you don’t know what to do with, a reading room is a great and imaginative way to infuse your home with a unique space!
