Tips for Choosing Wall Art for Your Home
July 21st, 2021When choosing furniture for your home, you (hopefully) spend a lot of time carefully considering which pieces will best serve you, remain long-lasting, and create the look you want for your space. You wouldn’t just walk into a department store and buy any old couch, right? Selecting the right furniture requires research, planning, and forethought. The same can be said for your wall art too!
Furnishing your home with pieces you’re going to love for a long time is what makes your home livable, and the pieces that adorn your walls are just as important as any others. As you’re selecting the right art for your home, keep these tips in mind to help guide you!
First and foremost, get the size right.
The biggest mistake people make when decorating with wall art is getting a piece that’s either too big or too small for their space. The wrong size art will throw off the balance of the entire room, so it’s important to determine what dimensions you’ll need before you start shopping. Decide where you’re going to place your new piece beforehand and take measurements of the space.
Design experts recommend placing the center of the art at standard eye level (about 57-60”) or 6-8” above the top of furniture, if you’re hanging it above something. Don’t forget to consider the size of the room too. An oversize art piece in a half bath will overwhelm, for instance, while a small piece in an open concept living room will underwhelm.
Pick your focal point.
When deciding where to place your art, consider the focal point of the room. There could be a natural architectural focal point, such as a fireplace, or a defining furniture piece, such as a couch in the living room. In these cases, you’ll want your art to highlight the focal point. Or, you can choose to make the wall art the focal point, in which case you’ll want a piece that stands out clearly.
For art intended to complement an existing focal point, your best bet is to look at small and medium pieces that blend in with the style of the surrounding area. If you want your piece to be the focal point and define the room, go for large or oversized statement pieces or a gallery wall.
Keep the style of the room in mind.
Consider the existing furniture, décor, colors, and overall style of the room you’re shopping for in your quest for wall art. You always want to choose art that suits the space it’s going in, but that doesn’t always mean it has to be in the exact same style. Going for something a little more unexpected, such as minimalist art to balance out more traditional décor, can break up your aesthetic and add visual interest.
Of course, you can never go wrong with art that matches the style of the room. Just make sure you choose something that is bold enough to be noticed. You don’t want your art to look out of place, but you don’t want it to get lost either.
Don’t choose art you don’t love.
Wall art for your home is an investment you should be able to cherish for years to come, especially considering you’ll be looking at it every day. No matter how many rules or guidelines there are for size or style, art is ultimately a way to express yourself and define your space however you’d like. Therefore, it’s important that the art you choose speaks to you.
Let your personality shine with colors, textures, shapes, and images in your art that appeal to and inspire you. Rules and guidelines like the ones above are helpful, but never buy your art just based on the suggestions of others. You’ll be living with it, so you should love it.
