5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bed Frame

Have you ever thought about the state of your bed frame? It’s not something that usually crosses our minds. We often hear about the importance of upgrading our pillows, changing our bedding, and replacing our mattresses, but what about the piece that holds it all together?

A bed frame is not just a platform to elevate your mattress off the ground. It also provides support and stability for you and your bed, ultimately promoting better sleep quality. Unfortunately, we often overlook the state of our bed frame. So, how can we tell when it’s time to invest in a new one?

Here are five signs it is time to replace your bed frame!

1) Creaking and Squeaking

Most of us have been led to believe that a noisy bedframe is normal, but that’s not true. Creaks and groans are actually the first indications of deteriorating quality in a bedframe. Plus, these noises irritate and interrupt your sleep or make it harder to fall asleep as you hear them while tossing and turning. If your bed seems to have something to say whenever you move, your frame is the likely culprit.

2) The Sinking Mattress

A bed frame is supposed to support your mattress, your body weight, and (depending on the size) another person’s weight, too. Does it feel like you’re sinking too low when you lie down? Or can you see your mattress dipping when you look at it? Many frames use wooden slats to support box springs and larger mattresses. Check underneath the bed and see if your slats are bowing (bent) or breaking. If they are, you’ll need a replacement frame sooner rather than later.

3) Problems with Hardware

The fixtures holding your bed frame together can become damaged with age and extended use. Screws and other small attachment pieces may come loose, twist, or even fall out and go missing altogether. If you keep using a frame in this condition, more serious problems will arise as it worsens. You’ll need to either replace damaged and missing hardware fixtures ASAP or start looking for a new bed frame if they’re set in the frame.

4) Damaged Wood

If left unaddressed, splitting and cracking in the wood of your support frame will likely lead to a collapse at some point. This could potentially injure you or someone else and damage your flooring. Even small splits can signal poor wood quality. You should inspect your bed frame regularly for wear and tear to the wood, especially if you start to hear creaking. At the first sign of damage, consider getting a new frame.

5) Poor Sleep

If you’re constantly waking up tired and having trouble getting a good night’s sleep, your first thought will probably be to get a new mattress. While your mattress could certainly be the problem, a declining or defective frame may also be the cause. If you recently got a new mattress (in the last couple of years or so), the issue is probably your bed frame. Your new mattress may not properly fit your old frame, meaning it’s not getting the support it needs to give you the support you need. Or, your frame may just be too old or damaged to provide reliable support.
