Fashion in Furniture
November 12th, 2014I am a long-haired 50 year old. Some say I’m fighting against growing old and there may be some truth to that. While the truth is that I am a rocker, I find long hair easy to maintain and the fact that my wife likes my greying locks doesn’t hurt either. I do recognize that it does get noticed, and derives unexpected comments from all sorts of people. Mostly good natured, but some quite stern and I’m OK with that. Some of the favourable comments (in my view) link it to an artistic bent and I would like to play that up. As a retailer, especially in home fashion, an artistic flair is an asset in selecting products and helps to bring notice to our store.
Furniture is a fashion industry; fashion for your home. Just as you feel better when you’re in your favorite outfit, you will feel better in a room the fits your fashion sense. Some things to ask yourself when considering your furniture fashion sense: What colours do you feel nurtured by or what type of vacation retreat do you gravitate toward? Perhaps you lean toward that lodge look from a western mountain resort with rich burgundy and earth tones and some leather pieces. Maybe a deep skirted sofa in blue and white, with deep comfy seating with a blanket to cozy up and read would bring a calming seaside retreat to your home.
The biggest difference between fashion you wear and fashion furniture is that you will have the furniture longer then the outfit (if this isn’t the case I would like to invite you to my furniture store). That doesn’t mean you should opt for boring. A quality piece of furniture that excites you now has a better chance of pleasing you in the long run. At the same time it is good to stick to classic and flexible styling for your major pieces and ad the whimsy in the accents that can be changed out more easily.
Remember it’s your space. I have a customer who turned their dining room into a small British pub and their living room into a tropical rainforest! Have some fun with it.
