A calming retreat after a long day of work, your master bedroom should provide you with the chance to curl up with a good book, relax with your spouse and sleep in comfort. The right design can greatly enhance your ability to unwind and a bedroom makeover may be just what you need. But where do you start?

The Bed

The main focus of your bedroom is the bed itself. Designers recommend placing the headboard against the wall that is across from the door. This will create an open floor plan, free of visual barriers. Depending on the size of your room, choose a queen or king size bed. Open floor space is key to a relaxing mood.

Nightstands

Next, consider your nightstands. Measure the height of your bed to figure out how tall these little tables should be. Also think about how much you put on top of your nightstands before choosing a size. Do you keep them empty or do you have a stack of books, a glass of water and table lamps there? For families who need more room in this area, choose nightstands with drawers to stay organized.

Seating

Whether you prefer a bench at the end of the bed or a cozy reading chair off to the side, seating is a great way to make a big master bedroom feel cozy. Just be sure to leave two feet of space around the perimeter of the bed to keep things from getting cramped.

Corners

Consider adding a corner fireplace, ā€œLā€ shaped bookshelf or a dressing table to your room. Options like these create a usable yet unobtrusive spot that will make the room your own. Visit Houzz for more unique corner ideas.
