How You Can Tell It’s Time for a New Mattress
January 18th, 2021The quality of sleep you get at night plays a big role in what kind of day you’ll have after you wake up. If you wake up feeling replenished, your store of energy will likely keep you thinking positively and moving efficiently throughout the day. On the other hand, if you wake up feeling groggy and sore, chances are you’re going to be irritable and miserable for the next few hours and beyond. In many cases, your daily fate is not determined simply by which metaphorical side of the bed you wake up on, but the mattress underneath you!
The quality of your mattress will make or break the quality of your sleep, which then determines the quality of your daily life. To ensure you’re getting the best sleep possible, watch out for these signs that your current mattress is no longer up to par and it’s time to invest in a new one!
You can feel or see your mattress sagging.
The materials in your mattress, whether it’s foam, innerspring, or hybrid, will break down over time with use. The result? Sagging. Springs will break down, foam will soften, and the other fibers will compress with them. If you feel yourself sleeping in a crater or get up and see an imprint of your body that doesn’t fade away, your mattress is on its way out. Keep an eye out for even minor sagging in the middle or corners of your mattress too, as this still means you’re not getting the support you need.
You can see it falling apart.
A high-quality mattress is built to last nearly a decade. Visible signs of wear and tear, therefore, signal that your mattress is past due for a replacement. The most obvious visible indicator will be lumps, bumps, and bulging that result from shifting of the padding. You may also see coils sticking out or rips in the fabric. Smaller signs, such as worn or frayed mattress edges that wouldn’t seem to affect your sleep, should not be ignored either.
Mornings have become painful and exhausting.
When you have a quality mattress, you should be waking up feeling refreshed and relaxed in mind and body. If instead, you’re feeling aches and pains in places like your neck, lower back, or hips, then it’s likely the materials of your mattress are degrading and you’re not getting enough support. When you don’t have the support to get comfortable at night, you end up tossing and turning, getting poor sleep, and feeling tired all day.
You keep “accidentally” falling asleep on the couch.
If you’re sleeping better in places other than your bed, it’s time to come to terms with the fact that you need to breakup with your mattress. When you feel more refreshed after a night on the couch or fall asleep easier on vacation in a hotel bed, that means your mattress is the most likely culprit for your otherwise poor sleep.
Your allergies are flaring up.
Do you wake up in the morning with a stuffy nose, itchy/watery eyes, a cough, or even a little skin rash? Or do you start to feel those symptoms soon after you tuck into bed for the night? If so, then it’s time to go mattress shopping. Mattresses accumulate allergens, such as mold, dust mites, hair and dander, and other irritants over time. So, if you seem to be experiencing new or worsening allergy symptoms after spending time in bed, your mattress likely needs to be replaced.
You’ve had your mattress for over 7 years.
Most mattresses are not designed to last for much more than 10 years with good care. If you’ve had yours for 7 years or longer, you should start thinking about looking for a new one. Even if it doesn’t seem like the comfort has decreased, your quality of sleep has probably been degrading slowly over time so that you got used to it without even noticing the change.
